Hello and welcome!

Here's where I'll be blogging about being a first-time small business owner, about things related to the massage industry, and sharing my own personal journey and thoughts as a licensed massage therapist, sharing photos - and (probably) a bunch more stuff.

A few short weeks ago, my studio space looked like this.

I hadn't actually planned to rent a space of my own right after graduation. Then I drove by a "For Rent" sign in a fairly ideal location. The rooms were pretty ideal, too, and the price was right. And the idea of working for myself - setting my own hours, controlling my own space - AND the learning curve of becoming a small business owner I quickly made reality. I will continue working to learn more and make it better as the journey continues and I gain more experience.

I planned, prepped, taped, primed and finally painted. The name of the color I chose for the massage room is "Rising Tide" - love the pale blue gray color. And the name (tides rise, tides ebb) ties in with the whole idea of the continuity and interconnectedness, the unity, of life. Next was furnishing the space. Thank goodness for Craig's List, upholstery foam, discount stores, generous family and gift certificates....

Now, it looks like this. Those who know me well know I have an affinity for twinkle lights, especially in the darker times of year.

Of course, I've learned over the years that processes almost always take longer than you think they're going to, and to plan for that fact. Now, I'm finalizing details. My "Unity Massage" signs should be ready at the end of the week. A few more things to go.

I first though of becoming a massage therapist nearly twenty years ago when I worked in nursing, but then, the timing was not right in my life for a career change. Fast forward through Em, RN and Teacher Em - and here I finally am. I lay out my philosophy on the first page of my website when I talk about the benefits of massage, and how regular massage therapy can be an integral part of self-care. Okay, I know there's a LOT of supporting information and clickable links there to articles - but yeah, supporting information: studies, facts .... It's not just my opinion. "Helping you heal you" (it's not my intent to FIX you) and "facilitating mind/body wellness" says it well. For me, regular massage is a piece of the puzzle, a part of the quilt, and when it comes to health, over all well-being and self-care, I think it's well worth finding the time to weave massage into your life.
